Foodhammer 40K! Year one.

A rather cold and rainy day greeted us, making us glad glad glad that we were playing 40K INSIDE!
As soon as we arrived, we made sure the special Foodhammer dice were bagged up and made available for sale.  We ordered these from Chessex dice and sold them to the happy happy people for $10 a set of ten.

We also ordered some special dice for auction.  Four sets of ten in different colours.

We had one person drop out at the last minute, and happily the first person who dropped out jumped back in again and at 10am we were off to a great start with game one!

Dan Deresh, GameStars manager announced spot prizes at certain trigger points in each game.  The first person to cause a unit to break won a Kit-Kat.  Have a break, have a Kit-Kat.  The honour went to James Chen with his Salamanders.

In our first game, the spot prize objective was to be the first to kill an HQ.  Calen Wong manage to do that by bumping off Shrike in his game against Devin Haverty. Well done, Calen!

Lunchtime was provided by Jordan West, the owner of the local Taco Del Mar.  He brought enough for 35 people and SOLD OUT! A very large portion of the proceeds from that food sale will also go to the Langley Food Bank. Thank you Jordan, we really appreciate it.  I think next time it happens we should ask Jordan to bring enough for 35 GAMERS! lol
Also, Jude Hansen Forbes baked a whole box of delicious cookies for sale by donation.  Throughout the day we saw happy gamers munching on them.  Thank you, Jude!

As the day went on, nobody else won Kit-Kats as they all forgot to call out for unit breaks, although in Game Two Devin Haverty won a copy of Duke Nukem Forever after he was the first to kill a unit - taking out Ryan McGechaen's Dreadknight.  In Game Three, Garry Sacco and his Necrons took an enemy unit below half strength and for his efforts got a copy of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

As stated earlier, our dice auctions on day one brought in $76 for two sets of dice.  SEVENTY SIX! All of the regular red dice sold out in a heartbeat.  The amount of food that was brought in really made us smile too.  Hopefully I'll be able to fill my truck when I take it all to Langley Food Bank. The onus really is on the Fantasy players for Sunday to beat that.  Square basers I'm looking at youuuu!

Results and photos of winners to follow.  Meanwhile here's a slideshow :-)

Foodhammer - the madness begins

We got the tables and everything set up on the Friday. Jason Dyer came down after finishing work and together we managed to get the store set up in such a way that the players had plenty of room, yet customers could still access the product on the shelves. Local terrain guru Robert Metzner kindly loaned us a large portion of his stock.  We had trouble moving around in the terrain storage room!

Once we'd sorted out which terrain pieces we wanted to use, we managed to set up some nice tables.  I think we got some good variation given the choices available to us.

Friday evening saw some open gaming from A-Club members and other customers, which game some people a chance to practice their lists and see what they were facing in the days to come!

Full!

This week has seen a flurry of activity with regard to registration for the Fantasy tournament. It really has been quite remarkable. This morning the final spot for the Fantasy tournament was taken. We now have twenty-six players on each day!

Of course from time to time life gets in the way and someone has to change their plans. If you would like to be on a waiting list just drop us a line at foodhammer@shaw.ca and we'll add you.

There are some prizes which I didn't mention last post. For Best Army Presentation there will be some more goodies from Warhammer World. For 40K there will be a print of a piece of Grey Knight artwork, along with a softback art book, with Warhammer World exclusive.
For Fantasy there is a print of the Gutsman character from Ogre Kingdoms and another copy of the art book.

There will be other items and happenings to announce so watch this space!

Of Dice and Men

We will have sets of these red dice, with our logo for this year's event on the '6' side, for sale over the Foodhammer weekend. There also will be "limited run" dice for auction!!

And in regard to the "of men" portion, due to an administrative fubar, there are now 26 players for this year's Foodhammer 40K.  Thirteen tables of dice-rolling awesomeness.

PRIZES!

We also have some wonderful prizes to announce, thanks to a generous donation by the good people of Bugman's Bar at GW HQ in Nottingham, UK we have two copies of The Bugman's Game to give away, one on each day.  Bugman's Bar is the ONLY place in the world where you can purchase this game.  It's a great social exercise involving getting your dwarf's table loaded up with food and ale while avoiding (or not) the NPCs roaming around the board, and scuppering your opponent's efforts to get loaded up too!

There will of course be other prizes for other categories.  To be announced! We're not giving everything away at once - just want to keep you interested ;-)

NOT ONLY THAT... SCORE!!

One of our good friends received not one but two copies of Aurelian, the new Horus Heresy novella by Aaron Dembski-Bowden, limited to 3000 copies world wide.  He decided to donate his spare copy to the event for us to auction off. The Gold Edition was signed by the author and was so sought after Black Library's server crashed on the day of release due to the demand.  There will be a SILENT AUCTION for this exclusive tome.  There will be a box placed in the store over the weekend where you can place your sealed bid.  The highest bid in the box at the end of the weekend gets the book.  If there's a tie, there'll have to be a game of Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock, best four of seven.

BONUS SCORE!

While we visited Warhammer World in early October, we managed to procure some posters.  First off is a poster of the 40K Fifth Edition cover art, signed by the artist Alex Boyd.  Then we have a Island of Blood promo poster signed by members of the design studio and finally a poster of some finely painted Chaos miniatures signed by members of the 'Eavy Metal team.  These will also be put up for sealed bid auction.

If you're playing, then while you're at it add to the excitement and place a bid or buy some dice to help your game along.  If you're not playing in the tournament then by all means bring a food donation (non-perishable, please) and place a bid or buy some dice - proceeds of course going to the Langley Food Bank!

40K Tournament is FULL

After the VanHammer 2011 tournament was held at GameStars recently, we decided to cut the number of spaces available in each day to 24.  This was purely a logistics move.  There is a waiting list, though - should any of our participants have to drop out.  Please email foodhammer@shaw.ca if you would like to be placed on the waiting list.

For now, here is a list of the 40K players signed up for the Saturday: List of 40K players

Registration available at GameStars

Dan has made arrangements for people to register in-store, if they so choose to.  I know some people prefer not to use PayPal, and that's cool.  You can swing by the store any time - the location information is available on this site - and give the staff your cash.  Please note that is is CASH ONLY as we don't want to mess with their accounting.  You'll be required to give some information and initial the form to say that you gave them the money.

I will make an effort to as other locations if they can also handle taking registration money in the near future.

Foodhammer will be using Tournament Overlord

We have our first outside sponsor for the tournaments! Gavin at RankingsHQ has very kindly granted us licenses for Tournament Overlord for the entire weekend. That means we can use their excellent software for keeping track of everyone's scores and make matchups and decide winners with even more ease than we could have ever dreamed of!

Tournament Overlord is Ranking HQ's custom built tournament administration software. It is a Windows based application designed in consultation with tournament administrators and players over several years. Tournament Overlord provides many tools, functions and features that remove the mundane and time consuming elements out of running an event.

A fully functional version can be downloaded and used for up to 12 players. For tournaments greater than 12 players tournament specific licenses can be purchased and downloaded instantly.

Thank you again, Gavin. That's a great help to use, you are very generous indeed!

It has begun!

Things are looking up, especially on the 40K side of things.  We've already had three register - that's 10% of the available spots gone already.  All of you guys in the square base crowd, sitting on the fence - come on, don't let the 40K guys raise more money than you do!

I got a memory jog today and wish to add that if anyone's bringing Sisters Of Battle, the new White Dwarf codex will be legal.  Everyone SHOULD have a copy of it so there ought not to be any questions! ;-)

Gaming for a cause

Hi there, and thanks for stopping by Foodhammer. 2011 is the first year of what we sincerely hope to be a long and successful run of using our favourite hobby to raise awareness and cash for the Langley Food Bank

A-Club is a Warhammer 40K gaming group that has been in existence for about five years in the Vancouver, BC area.  We started out in an apartment then when it just became wayyyy too much for our founding member, Thor.  Thor moved the club into some warehouse space where we made a home and gamed happily for a good few years with some insane games of Apocalypse!  Then some downsizing happened and we moved around a little until now we're hosted by the Very Friendly Local Gaming Store, GameStars

A-Club has hosted a few tournaments across the years including two successful West Coast Mayhem conventions.  I decided this year that I want to host tournaments that aren't just about the gamers.  We're very fortunate to be able to afford to participate in this hobby - we all know it isn't cheap.  Which led me to my next thought, about those who sometimes can't afford the basics. I see my son at school with his friends, and I know that some of those kids come from families who have those struggles. Sometimes their parents have to visit the Food Bank to keep their food cupboards and stomachs from going empty. That is the reason I chose to hold this event in aid of the food bank.

I actually got some inspiration for this journey I'm on from the great guys who ran last year's incredible Storm Wardens Project for Doctors Without Borders, and who this year are taking a bigger bite of the apple with Heroes Of Armageddon.  Their work is incredible.  They raised an amazing $16,000 last year for DWB and I know they'll blow it away this year.  My hats off to you guys!

So what we are going to do this year is start small. Small-ish.
The store has enough room for fifteen tables.  Thirty (30) players.  What we are going to do is two tournaments.  We'll have our Warhammer 40,000 tournament on Saturday November 26th hosted by A-Club, and the Warhammer Fantasy Battle tournament on Sunday November 27th hosted by the great guys at WCP Vancouver.  Of course, those of you who are brave enough can enter both tournaments!

There will be prizes a-plenty, and food and Food Bank collection boxes, and lots and lots and lots of Warhammer!

I'm really excited about this, and I'm sure the rest of the team - Jason, Nick, Kevin, Paul, Jind and Dan as well as the staff at GameStars are.  I hope you'll come.  Keep an eye on the website.  Watch Twitter for the hashtag #Foodhammer.  Watch Facebook too because we'll be launching an event page there soon.
